When is the whale shark season?
From 15 May to 17 September, the dates SEMARNAT has set for the Mexican Caribbean for 2025 to 2027. No operator offers whale sharks year-round, and outside those dates no whale shark swims are sold.
How do I get to Isla Mujeres from Cancún?
Passenger ferries cross from Puerto Juárez in about 20 minutes, and the island is about 15 km off the coast. Some trips pick you up in Cancún instead.
Where do the trips meet?
Most meet in downtown Isla Mujeres, a short walk from the ferry: on Avenida Hidalgo or Avenida Juárez, at the Black Pearl dock, or across the street from the ferry terminal. Each card names its own meeting point.

Is Isla Contoy worth it?
It is a different day: a bird-island national park about 25 km north, with guided trails, a beach and a snorkel stop, and lunch. The park charges MXN 225 a person, and sunscreen is not allowed on the island.
Which trips visit the underwater museum?
Most shared reef trips stop at the museum's Manchones gallery, often as the last of three stops. The Casa del Buceo trip goes to two shallow reefs instead.
What will I see?
On the reefs you may see parrotfish, angelfish, rays, turtles and the odd nurse shark. The park lists elkhorn coral, hawksbill turtles and spotted eagle rays among its species. Nothing is guaranteed.
Can I touch the coral or the fish?
No. The park's rules forbid touching or feeding any species, and anchoring on the seagrass.
How do I get back on the boat?
On most boats you jump or step in from the side and climb a ladder back up. Tell the crew before you start if that is hard for you.
Are whale sharks guaranteed?
No, they are wild. One operator says it may find one, more than a hundred, or on rare days none.
How many people swim with a whale shark at once?
Two guests and a guide enter the water together. The boat waits while you swim, and each pair usually gets two turns.
How close can I get?
At least 5 m away, with no touching, under SEMARNAT's rules. One boat stays with a shark for at most 30 minutes while others wait.
Can I bring a GoPro?
Yes, but no flash, lights or selfie sticks around the whale sharks. Several crews film you and sell the footage.
How long is a whale shark day?
Six to six and a half hours. After the swim most boats stop for a reef snorkel or at a beach on the island's north end, with lunch.
Can children swim with the whale sharks?
Each listing sets its own minimum age, so check the card before you book. Anyone who swims needs to handle open water with waves.
