The best snorkeling around Isla Mujeres sits in a handful of named places: the statues of the underwater museum, the Manchones reef, the shallow reef at El Farito, and the bird island of Isla Contoy to the north. Here is what each one is, how deep, and which trips go there. Then choose the best snorkeling tour Isla Mujeres that stops where you want.
The Museo Subacuático de Arte, or MUSA, is the work of the sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. It was installed in 2009 and holds over 500 permanent life-size sculptures. The museum has two galleries. The Manchones gallery lies about 8 m down and is open to both divers and snorkelers. This is the one the Isla Mujeres trips visit.
At 8 m you look down on the statues from the surface. On a calm, clear day you see rows of figures standing on the sand. On a rough or murky day they are faint shapes, so pick a calm morning if the museum is your reason to go.
The sculptures are pH-neutral cement, placed downstream of natural reefs so that coral can settle on them. The artist gives the installations over 420 m² of what was bare seabed. Among his named works are The Silent Evolution, a 120-tonne group of more than 400 figures, and The Bankers, Inertia, Reclamation and The Listener.
Manchones is the natural reef beside the museum gallery, and most shared reef trips pair the two. The Island Adventures listing calls it the area's largest coral reef. That is the operator's own claim; no official survey gives its size.
Pocna, Isla Sea Tours and Isla Fun Tours all name it as a stop. You drift over coral heads and sand channels, with grunts, snappers and parrotfish around you. Expect a boat ride of a few minutes from the museum.
El Farito is a shallow reef around a small lighthouse on a rock off the island. CONANP's own record of the national park pictures it among the park's sites. Isla Sea Tours describes shallow, sheltered water, much like a natural pool.
That makes it the gentlest stop on the map, and a good first snorkel for children or nervous swimmers. Casa del Buceo's short trip goes to two shallow reefs rather than the museum. Isla Sea Tours makes El Farito the first of its three stops.
Playa Norte is the beach at the island's north tip, within walking distance of downtown. The Quintana Roo tourism board calls it one of the ten best beaches in the world. The water is shallow and calm, which suits a swim more than a snorkel.
The Isla Sea Tours whale shark days end here, with lunch and a swim after the open sea. On a free afternoon you can walk there yourself.
The museum's second gallery, the Salón Nizuc, lies off Punta Nizuc on the Cancún coast. It is about 4 m deep and open to snorkelers only. It sits in the same national park, whose full name ends "Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc".
The Isla Mujeres trips do not go there; they visit the Manchones gallery instead. If you see "MUSA" on a trip from Cancún's hotel zone, check which gallery it means.
Isla Contoy is a separate national park, reached by boat from Isla Mujeres, Puerto Juárez or Punta Sam, about 25 km away. It is a bird island. CONANP lists brown pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, spiny-tailed iguanas and four kinds of mangrove.
CONANP says January's north winds often keep the port closed. The Contoy Adventours day adds a snorkel stop and lunch, and it meets at 8:30am on Avenida Juárez.
CONANP's species list for the park names elkhorn and staghorn coral, the hawksbill turtle, the spotted eagle ray and the queen conch, among others. Its record of the park also pictures sea fans, brain coral, grunts and a grey angelfish. You may see some of them; none is promised on any one day.
Look for a coral nursery too. CONANP's record pictures an elkhorn coral nursery in the park, part of the work to regrow the reef. Keep your fins clear of the coral wherever you swim.
