mainland terminal, or leaves from a mainland marina. You do not buy a ferry ticket or find a
pier on the island.
Two kinds of trip sell it: the whale shark days, in season, and the private boats. The
shared reef trips do not. They all start downtown on the island, so for those you cross on the
passenger ferry first.
The ferry takes about 20 minutes, so crossing yourself is not hard. But a pickup takes the
planning off your hands, and on a whale shark day it saves you an early crossing.
