About Isla Mujeres Snorkeling

The reefs off Isla Mujeres lie inside the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc, a federal marine park decreed in 1996, and since 2009 hundreds of life-size statues have stood on its sea floor. Join us on the water: the park allows movement only by authorised boat, so a boat trip is how you reach them. Most Isla Mujeres snorkeling trips leave downtown piers a short walk from the ferry, while whale shark days and private boats can collect you in Cancún. We bring together the trips worth your time.

Fees, Piers and the Ferry

There is no gate or ticket office. The national park charges MXN 125 per person per day, shown by a conservation wristband, and children under 12 are exempt. Most listings also collect their own dock fee in cash on the day, so carry some. The passenger ferry from Puerto Juárez in Cancún takes about 20 minutes.

Where the Boats Stop

Most reef trips stop at the underwater museum's Manchones gallery, 8 m down, at Manchones reef and at El Farito, a shallow reef around a small lighthouse. Playa Norte, the beach at the north tip, is where some whale shark days stop for lunch, and Isla Contoy, about 25 km north, is a bird-island day of its own.

Swimming With Whale Sharks

Whale shark swims run only from 15 May to 17 September under SEMARNAT's plan. Two swimmers and a guide enter the water at a time, at least 5 m from the animal, and each boat stays with a shark for 30 minutes at most. Sunscreen, flash and selfie sticks are banned, so wear a long-sleeved top instead.

Best time to visit

In Cancún the average high runs from 28.7°C in January to 35.1°C in August, and about 1,371 mm of rain falls in a year, most of it from June to November. Pack a long-sleeved top for the whale sharks, where sunscreen is banned, and a dry layer for the ride back.

How much does an Isla Mujeres snorkeling tour cost?

Shared reef trips run from $50 to $89 a person, and the shared whale shark days $155 to $160. The private boats cost $599 to $949 for the group. Most listings add a cash dock or park fee of US$5 to US$20 a person on the day.

Is there a ticket for Isla Mujeres snorkeling?

No gate ticket exists. The reefs and the underwater museum lie in a national park that charges MXN 125 a person a day, proven by a wristband, and most operators collect it with their dock fee. Children under 12 are exempt from the park's own fee.

What is the dock fee, and do I pay it in cash?

It is a per-person charge the listing names, from US$5 to US$20, often called a dock, park or environmental fee. Most listings ask for it in cash on the day, so bring small notes. A few fares already include it, and their cards say so.

Can I cancel for free?

Every trip listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. Each card states its terms, so read yours before you book.

Do I need to book in advance?

For the whale sharks, yes: the boats take ten to twenty people and the season is short. Reef trips leave every day from several downtown piers, but booking a day or two ahead keeps your choice of time.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You need to be comfortable in open water. Life jackets are compulsory in the national park, and a guide swims with the group. If you cannot swim, ask the operator before you book.

How deep is the underwater museum?

The Manchones gallery lies about 8 m down, so you look at the statues from the surface. On a rough or murky day they look faint.

Can I wear sunscreen?

Not in the whale shark area, where SEMARNAT's rules ban it. On the reef trips, operators ask you to put on a reef-safe one before you board, or to cover up with a long-sleeved shirt.

Will I get seasick?

The whale shark ride is about an hour each way on open sea, and it can be choppy. Small reef boats rock in wind too. If you get seasick, plan for it before you board.

When is the whale shark season?

From 15 May to 17 September, the dates SEMARNAT has set for the Mexican Caribbean for 2025 to 2027. No operator offers whale sharks year-round, and outside those dates no whale shark swims are sold.

How do I get to Isla Mujeres from Cancún?

Passenger ferries cross from Puerto Juárez in about 20 minutes, and the island is about 15 km off the coast. Some trips pick you up in Cancún instead.

Where do the trips meet?

Most meet in downtown Isla Mujeres, a short walk from the ferry: on Avenida Hidalgo or Avenida Juárez, at the Black Pearl dock, or across the street from the ferry terminal. Each card names its own meeting point.

When is the best time for Isla Mujeres snorkeling?

March and April are the driest months in Cancún's records, and the whale sharks come from mid-May to mid-September. October is the wettest month, inside the hurricane season that runs from June to November.
