The short answer. Isla Mujeres hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the US National Hurricane Center puts the Atlantic peak on 10 September. Rain alone is not what stops a snorkeling trip. When the sea turns or a storm nears, the harbour master closes the port to small boats and to all water recreation. When is hurricane season on Isla Mujeres?

The island sits in the Caribbean Sea, which the US National Hurricane Center counts as part of the Atlantic basin. Its season runs from 1 June to 30 November. The peak falls on 10 September, and most of the activity comes between mid-August and mid-October.

An average season, on the 1991-2020 record, brings 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes to the whole basin. SEMAR's own description of the port names only two hurricanes that struck Isla Mujeres: Gilbert in 1988 and Wilma in 2005. So plan on this basis: a direct hit is rare, and a closed port is common.

Did you know? Wilma made landfall on Cozumel as a category 4 hurricane on 21 October 2005. The NHC's report on the storm says Isla Mujeres had hurricane-force gusts for nearly 24 hours, across 21 and 22 October.

Which months carry the most risk?

The rain figures are SMN's 1991-2020 normals for Cancún, the station across the channel. They are averages, not your forecast.

June: 184.4 mm on about 12 days, in whale shark season.
July: the driest of the six, 67.0 mm on about 9 days.
August: 102.2 mm on about 12 days. The busiest storm window opens mid-month.
September: 181.5 mm on about 15 days, and the peak falls on the 10th. The whale shark season closes on the 17th.
October: the wettest month of the year, 277.1 mm on about 18 days, with the whale sharks gone.
November: 131.4 mm on about 13 days. The season ends on the 30th.

Who closes the port, and what that stops

The decision is not the operator's. The Capitanía de Puerto, the harbour master's office within SEMAR, opens and closes the port.

What a closure covers

SEMAR's bulletin of 26 March 2023 shows what a closure means. That day a southerly wind, the surada, crossed the Gulf and the Caribbean, and the Isla Mujeres port was closed to boats under 40 feet and to all recreational water activity. SEMARNAT caps whale shark boats at 11 m, about 36 ft, so they stop too.

That bulletin came in the cold-front season, which SEMAR dated September 2022 to May 2023. SEMAR's port description adds that in the norte season the winds raise strong swells that restrict navigation. A closed port can happen to you in any month.

Where to check whether the port is open

SEMAR publishes a live page, the 'Estado operacional de los Puertos Mexicanos', on which ports are open and closed, kept up to date by its port-captaincy unit, UNICAPAM. On the beach, the harbour master's flags show the sea state: green is good for swimming and diving, yellow means take care with currents, and red means you must not enter the sea.

Useful tip. Call or message your operator the evening before your trip, and ask whether the port is open and the boat is going. A good shop will move you to a better day before you walk to the dock.

How Mexico's storm alerts work

Mexico warns of tropical cyclones through SIAT-CT, its early-warning system. Its alerts run through five colours, from blue for the lowest risk through green, yellow and orange to red for the highest. The system can warn up to 72 hours before a storm reaches a place. Once an alert is up for Quintana Roo, move your boat trip rather than wait for the day, and follow what the authorities tell you.

Refunds, new dates and the 24-hour rule

Every trip we list refunds you in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts. Inside 24 hours, a refund is not promised. Most listings add a weather clause: the trip needs good weather, and if it is cancelled for poor weather, you are offered a different date or a full refund.

Reviews show how this plays out. In June 2024, one group found the ports closed on their whale shark day, and the crew of the Contoy Adventours reef trip found them another option at the last minute. In February 2024, a couple called at the semi-private trip's shop the day before and were rebooked onto a better day. Not every rough day is cancelled: in November 2025, a reviewer on the Contoy Adventours trip went out in stormy weather and found the waves high and the swim hard.

Six ways to plan a snorkeling trip between June and November

Book early in your stay, as a yacht reviewer advised for the rainy season in November 2024, so a cancelled boat has days to move to.
Book a morning trip where you can, so a delay still leaves you the afternoon.
Keep one spare day with nothing fixed in it.
Check the port page and ask the operator the evening before.
Watch the NHC outlook and any SIAT-CT alert from 72 hours out.
On a windy week, choose a short trip near the island (three or four hours from downtown) over a six-hour day on the open sea.

Which trips fit a hurricane-season week

Short trips close to the island are the easiest to fit around the weather. The three-hour reef and museum trip leaves from Avenida Hidalgo and stays near the island, so a lost morning moves to another day without costing you a whole one.
